Landscape Architect appointed by Harcourt Development - 26 March 2008

Harcourt Development is pleased to announce the appointment of an award winning firm of landscape architects to work on the Esplanade Square development on the St Helier Waterfront. Townshend Landscape Architects were appointed following consultation with the Waterfront Design Group, and offer a professional landscape, environmental planning and urban design service. The practice was set up in 1988 and has successfully delivered and designed many award winning landscape and public projects through the UK and mainland Europe.

Pat Power, Director of Harcourt Developments said: “We are enormously excited to have Robert Townshend and his team on board. They have delivered excellent and imaginative designs across Europe and their proposals are creative and will be a superb addition to the waterfront, creating green spaces that people will be able to enjoy.”

He continued “This development will play a key role in allowing the finance industry to compete on an international scale by providing a purpose built financial district  as well as including four hundred new homes in addition to shops, restaurants, bars and major public spaces. It is not about Old St Helier versus New St Helier; it is about Jersey versus its competitors across the world.”

Townshend Landscape Architects recently won two awards in the London Planning Awards – Bishop Square was the winner in the Best New Public Space category and Kings Cross Central won the Overall Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Planning and was praised for creating a new gateway to the capital.

Robert Townshend explained: “We are honoured to come on board with this project. The potential for the site is tremendously exciting and we want to create something truly memorable.”

The Waterfront Design Group was created by Senator Freddie Cohen, Minister for Planning and Environment, to have an overview of the design of the Waterfront development and make sure it had a strong Jersey context. Mike Waddington, Director at Naish Waddington sits on the Waterfront Design Group: “Part of our remit is to ensure that the Waterfront is landscaped to a very high standard and quality. We recommended that Townshend Landscape Architects be appointed and are delighted that suggestion has been taken forward”

“A project of this scale requires a landscape architect who can capture the character of the island. Townshend immediately impressed us because they understood the importance of uniting elements like water, granite and plants - all relevant to Jersey - in a powerful and high quality manner. It is very important to us that their designs capture the unique character of Jersey.”
